This is a prequel to the Coldfire trilogy. I got this as a free download from Audible.com. I read the Coldfire trilogy some 20 years ago back when I was in highschool, so I honestly don’t remember it all that well. In fact I didn’t remember any of the characters that were in this prequel. I do keep meaning to go back and reread the Coldfire series (I don’t think I actually ever finished the third book) and maybe this will spur me on to do so.
The quality of the audiobook was fine. The narrator wasn’t outstanding but wasn’t bad either.
This is a very short story about Gerald Terrant as he journeys into a dangerous Fey forest to test his might against the powers there. There is also a Church woman fighter named Faith who takes on a White Wolf. Later Gerald has some involvement with the White Wolf.
The story was okay but pretty brief. I think it you are a huge fan of the Coldfire trilogy you will probably enjoy this prequel to the series. It adds a little more background on the character of Gerald Terrant.
I honestly don’t have a ton to say about this novella. It was decently written, but not very engaging. I think it may had been of more interest to me if I had just finished the Coldfire trilogy. Friedman obviously assumes you know all about Gerald Terrant and doesn’t really make an effort to introduce him or make him an engaging character for readers. The White Wolf is a much more intriguing character in this story.
Overall an okay dark fantasy novella, that will probably be a decent read if you have read the Coldfire trilogy. I personally would skip this if you haven’t read the Coldfire trilogy yet.
