I got a copy of this book to review through NetGalley. This was a wonderful continuation of this fantastic YA fantasy series. Full of magic and intrigue; I really have been loving this series a lot.
Cécile has escaped the darkness of Trollus and is living with her mother in Trianon and training to be an operatic singer. However she can’t escape the thought of her husband, Tristan, trapped in Trollus and being tortured…she is determined to break the curse. When the King of Trollus strikes Cecile a deal she can’t refuse, Cecile finds herself sworn to hunt down the evil witch Anushka and end the curse on Trollus forever.
This was a wonderful continuation of the Malediction Trilogy. I really love both Cecile and Tristan as characters. They have an interesting dynamic…they are married and can feel each others feelings but have never gotten a chance to really know each other. In this book they really learn to work as a team and it was so wonderful to see. They have great chemistry together and were so fun to read about.
This book is mainly one big mystery filled with intrigue and magic. Cecile is desperately working to find a way to break the curse on Trollus, although she fears the consequences is she does. The key to the mystery is the witch Anushka, who we finally get to meet.
There is some wonderful magic in here as Cecile seeks to learn more about her magic and even delves into the dark depths of blood magic. It was interesting to watch her walk that line between what is necessary and what is evil.
My only complaint is that there is a big twist at the end I saw coming a mile away. I wish this had been a bit less predictable…but well it was what it was I guess.
Overall this was an absolutely fantastic YA fantasy novel. There is a ton of wonderful magic and intrigue in this book. I love the chemistry between Cecile and Tristan and how they are both striving to make the kingdom a better place for all involved. I really enjoyed this book a ton and am very excited to see how the story wraps up in the final book of this series. This series is highly recommended to fans of intrigue heavy fantasy.
