I have read all of the books in the Darkest London series but got this novella a while ago and had yet to read it. This ended up being a really good novella, it stands on it’s own well and provides a wonderfully romantic story with some paranormal elements.
Eamon Evernight has always lived in his brother’s shadow and covered for the fact that his brother can’t read or write. When Eamon’s brother is betrothed to Lady Luella he asks Eamon to correspond back and forth with Lady Luella for him. Over the years of correspondence Eaman falls in love with Luella. When tragedy strikes Luella’s household and she is suddenly at their house to marry Eamon’s brother (who she thinks is the man who wrote the letters) things get complicated.
Eamon and Luella have amazing chemistry together and the tension between them is enticing and amazing. I really enjoyed watching them unravel each other’s dark secrets and fall in love all over again. The whole thing was very well done.
This is a historical fantasy so the story takes place in the Victorian period. There are also some paranormal elements; Eamon can control metal in strange ways and Luella has secrets of her own as well.
Overall I really enjoyed this a lot. This novella provided an excellent stand alone story (this could be read easily without reading the rest of the Darkest London series). I really loved the characters and the mystery. I also enjoyed the slightly paranormal overtone to some of the mysteries. I would recommend this to those who enjoy reading paranormal romance; this is a very sweet, steamy, and well done story.
