“Fortuna Sworn is the last of her kind. Her brother disappeared two years ago, leaving her with no family or species to speak of. She hides among humans, spending her days working at a bar and her nights searching for him. The bleak pattern goes on and on… until she catches the eye of a powerful faerie. He makes no attempt to hide that he desires Fortuna. And in exchange for her, he offers something irresistible. So Fortuna reluctantly leaves her safe existence behind to step back into a world of creatures and power. It soon becomes clear that she may not have bargained with her heart, but her very life.”
This is the first book in the Fortuna Sworn series. I got this as an ebook from the author to review. I really really enjoyed this. While it was a lot different than Sutton’s YA books, it has that same dark tone to it.
Fortuna Sworn is a Nightmare, the last of her kind. She is desperate to find her brother and a powerful faerie gives her the opportunity to do just that…for a price.
I enjoyed the adventures Fortuna had in Faerie and the trials she had to overcome. The characters and settings were very intriguing and engaging. I also loved the strange creatures and powers and how Fortuna Sworn is a Nightmare type of Fallen.
I always enjoy books with a dark faerie tale type of theme to them and this book has that in spades. The characters were well done, they are complex and have a dark cast to their personalities while still showing hints of goodness.
This was a very creative book, that sucked me right in. I had trouble putting it down and can’t wait for the next one in the series. Some scenes in this book are pretty adult (sex, torture, etc); so I would recommend for adults only.
Overall I really loved this book and plan on continuing the series. I would recommend to adults who enjoy dark fantasy stories featuring faerie. I really enjoyed how creative this was and all of the adventures and trials Fortuna went through.
