“Maika and Corvin make their way through a warped and lethal land in search of Kippa, who is faced with her own terrible monsters. But when Maika comes face-to-face with a stranger from her deep past, startling truths are uncovered, and at the center of it all lurks a dangerous conspiracy that threatens the Known World. Maika is finally close to getting all the answers she ever wanted, but at what price? With war on the horizon—a war no one wants to stop—whose side will Maika choose?”
Series Info/Source: This is the fourth volume in the Monstress series. I bought this.
Story (4/5): After the disaster with the old god, Maika and Corvin try to fight through the literally maddened crowds to find Kippa. However, Kippa is off on adventures of her own. Then Maika is kidnapped and discovers that she is in the hands of her father and is introduced to the immense army that he has amassed to face off with the Dawn and Dusk courts. I enjoyed this a lot, it moves at a good clip and introduces us to even more of the world. The sections Maika spends with her father were a bit long and slow, but it was an interesting introduction to the “otherside” per say.
Characters (5/5): I really enjoyed that Kippa sets off on her own and starts to become a more developed character. I also enjoyed meeting Maika’s father and his “world”. Maika continues to be intriguing and watching her walk the fine line of right and wrong will continue to be interesting as she is faced with conflicting loyalties in the coming battle.
Setting (5/5): I continue to really love the lush fantasy world this is set in. The world has a lot of depth and complexity to it and I love immersing myself in it.
Writing/Drawing Style (5/5): This book jumps around a bit more than previous ones but it was well done. The story continues to be intriguing and the world-building and characters are amazing. The drawing is spectacular and it’s always fun just to sit and look at; it is just so beautifully done with so much detail.
My Summary (5/5): Overall I really enjoyed this addition to the Monstress series. I look forward to seeing where this series goes. If you enjoy dark fantasy I would strongly recommend this series to you.
