“What It Is: Susan, Esther, and Daisy started at university three weeks ago and became fast friends. Now, away from home for the first time, all three want to reinvent themselves. But in the face of handwringing boys, “personal experimentation,” influenza, mystery mold, nuchauvinism, and the willful, unwanted intrusion of “academia,” they may be lucky just to make it to spring alive.”
Series Info/Source: This is the first volume in the Giant Days graphic novel series. There are 14 volumes in this graphic novel series and the series has been completed. I got a copy of this book as an early Christmas gift.
Thoughts: In general I enjoyed this. It’s drawn in a cartoony style that is bright and colorful and easy to follow. The story follows three college freshmen girls (Susan, Esther, Daisy) and their exploits as they navigate college. The girls are incredibly different from each other but form an unlikely friendship.
This is a cute read. The story is engaging and the characters are fun. I enjoyed this and thought it was a fun and quick read. The story is easy to follow and the characters are quirky but heartfelt. I enjoyed Esther’s ability to create undue drama even when she wasn’t trying to, it was pretty hilarious.
My Summary (4/5): Overall this was a fun and quick read about some young women learning about themselves as they start their first year in college. It is humorous, quirky and heartfelt. The drawing is bright, colorful, and easy to follow. I am unsure whether or not I will continue the series because I enjoy more fantasy and adventure in my graphic novels (rather than more day in the life types of reads). However, this was very well done if you are looking for a contemporary fiction graphic novel series about some young women finding their (humorous) way through college.
