“It’s a new year in Winterspell…and a new mystery.
I’ve always wanted to meet a mermaid, but when I finally get my chance on New Year’s Eve, the circumstances are far darker than I’d imagined. One of the mermaids isn’t what she appears to be, and if I don’t find a way to break the spell, she will never be herself again.
With strange magic in the air and a dangerous force lurking in the shadows, I have to find the truth and keep myself from being the next one to wind up caught in the sorcerer’s web.”
Series Info/Source: This is the 3rd book in the Sugar Shack Witch Mysteries. I borrowed this on audiobook from Audible.
Thoughts: This was a cute and simple paranormal mystery with a bit of romance in it. I listened to this on audiobook and the audiobook is very well done; Amanda Ronconi is an excellent narrator.
In this installment of the Sugar Shack Witch Mysteries, Rosella is delivering a cake to a fancy venue when she finds out they have mermaids on display for the event. Rosella sneaks in to talk to the mermaids only to find out that one mermaid has been separated from her daughter and that one of the mermaids didn’t start as a mermaid but is a cursed human. Orion just happens to take his vacation in Winterspell and what is supposed to be his and Rosella’ first date, ends up being a stake out instead. Rosella is determined to get some info about the company renting out the mermaids and help rescue the missing daughter.
I continue to enjoy the town of Winterspell and Rosella and her relationship both with Orion and her family. This is just a cute, cozy paranormal mystery. Nothing ever gets too dire; there is light humor throughout, and it is an easy and fun listen.
The mystery here wasn’t super complex, but it was decent. Rosella and Orion make some progress in their budding relationship in a mature and thought out way. We learn a bit more about both the town of Winterspell and the managing magic organization. Rosella is also starting to find her footing in the Winterspell community and realize she might be able to continue her journalism.
This is one of those books that isn’t ground-breaking or amazing, but it is a cute, cozy, feel-good read that is fun. This has been the perfect series to listen to while I am working on remodeling work on my house; it doesn’t take too much brain power or concentration to follow, but is still entertaining.
My Summary (4/5): Overall I enjoyed this and plan to continue with the series. This is a fun light-hearted paranormal story with a decent mystery, some light romance, and some fun magic. This has very cozy vibes to it and I enjoy the town of Winterspell and Rosella’s crazy family. I also enjoyed seeing Rosella start to find her footing and feel better about where her life is going. This is the perfect audiobook to listen to while you are doing mundane activities like cleaning, remodeling etc.
