“Think your life is hell?
Try being the Prince of Darkness’s only daughter—a seventeen-year-old born and raised in Hell, destined to inherit the throne, and constantly enduring the (literal) eternal moans and screams of souls who had it coming.
The only thing worse than ruling the Underworld is working here. Day after day, it’s me, a bunch of demons who are too intimidated by my dad to befriend me, and an endless lineup of sinners. Until Nathan Reynolds shows up, with a smile that could turn brimstone to butterflies, claiming he’s innocent.
I don’t question the system; it’s never wrong. But Nate’s pleading eyes have me doubting everything I’ve ever known.
So, I’m going to do the one thing I’m not supposed to do: I’m going to help him break out. Even if it means showing Nate exactly who I am. Metaphorical horns and all.
Because if we don’t make it out of here? We’re not just damned. We’re doomed.”
Series Info/Source: This is a stand alone book. I got this on ebook from NetGalley to review.
Thoughts: This was a cute YA paranormal read. I enjoyed the adventures through the realms of Hell and enjoyed the family themes here. The characters were fun as well, but are very YA…they don’t have a ton of depth and there is a lot of focus on them falling in love.
Devica is the daughter of Satan and is working a job helping to send souls to the punishments where they belong. The souls always protest that they don’t belong in Hell. However, when Nate shows up, it is different. He claims he is innocent, and Devica believes him. She decides to break him out of Hell and find the truth. The adventure will lead her to a lot of hidden truths about her own past as well.
This was well written and a breeze to read. I read it very quickly and stayed engaged in the story. While I really loved the first half of the book, the second half felt a bit clunky to me. Some of the things that happen seem contrived. I also felt like towards the end of the book, the dialogue, especially between Devica and her parent, was very awkward sounding.
This is obviously going to be a series and ends on a large cliffhanger. Normally, I don’t like this, but for this book the main story in this book was wrapped up, and the cliffhanger was the start of the next book so it worked.
Will I continue with this series? Eh, probably not. This was cute and decently written, and I liked some of the adventure in the first half of the book. However, there wasn’t anything here that really blew me away and made me eager to read future books.
My Summary (4/5): Overall this was fine, I liked it. It’s a cute YA romance with some adventure, mystery, and paranormal elements. It was easy to read and fun. The second half of the book felt more contrived than the first, and I also felt like the dialogue got a bit goofy and awkward sounding at points. Will I continue with this series? Probably not, it was fine, but I just have other series that I enjoy more. If you are looking for YA paranormal book with some adventure and romance I think you might enjoy this.
